Common sense items: clean & defrag your harddrive before installing. Update drivers. If your running xp try this (works for me) Create another user. Turn off all xp bells and whistles for this one,no screensaver, background pic, use old-style windows motif, etc. Note- doing that alone cut 15 active proccesses from running for me - saves memory and cpu cycles for game. If nothing else play around with game sttings.

If that doesn't work, you should install a script which gets rid of lots of asteroids and rocks. I haven't used it since x3 is running well, but i read that it gives a good fps boost. Do a search on the x3 forums or post a question there for the link.

The x1 team have released their first trailer for the mod, a lot of effort and commitment has been put into the mod since it was founded in November 2007. This mod is a total conversion of the game X3 the reunion and hopefully in the future X3 Terran conflict. Trailer for X1TP v0.1.

Another thing i recommend is that you disconnect from the internet (u can use steam in an offline mode), shut everything down like piper says, but now including all virus scanners, security, and even windows explorer! Have to shut explorer down after you have started to run x3 through steam. I do all the above for oblivion since it is so demanding on my comp, and it has given me some good added fps. Oh, and don't overlook your graphics card settings- make sure AA isn't on.

From what I remember, the ITS mod relied heavily on the TShip files, and required a ton of work for each ship (They weren't cross compatible with different versions of the same ship, so you had to create a whole new cockpit for the Nova Vangaurd as the Nova Raider, even if it looked identical.) It was incredibly buggy way back when, and would cause random stuff to happen to your ship, like your cargo bay would simply disappear and you would have 0 space available, or your guns would go from 100% energy to 0 for no reason, even if you weren't firing at something, and the game would crash a lot. He probably just got frustrated and went with the simpler design because it provided the same experience as being in a cockpit, but not the same aesthetics, while not crashing the game.
