IPMI over LAN/DCMI is supported by all iLOs for free. As are several other features. Some specific features like KVM over IPMI (iLO Remote Console) are not included with Rack and Tower servers but are included with blades. As said, you do get KVM before and during POST, but not after the OS loads. So you can configure BIOS and F8 the array controller, but have to use RDP or VNC from there.
There is a trial license that's like 30 days that I tell customers to use to get their OS all loaded and dialed in and by the time it runs out you usually have alternate access methods. There is an 'iLO Essentials' license that is WAY cheaper than iLO Advanced that includes Remote Console and some other SMB type features. I would also recommend getting them/you an HP Passport account and turning on iLO Insight Online Direct or whatever it's called. The machine will phone home if there is a failed component under warranty and open a case automatically. So any R or T box that is 6 or higher (6XX 7XX 8XX 9XX) has an express for free, this is a shared port that doesn't have iKVM or virtual media but does do basic monitoring and power control. Anything 5 and below is a BMC by default and can have an iDRAC added except for a T110.
The 9th and 10th gen servers used DRAC 5s The 11th gen servers used hardware licensed iDRAC 6 The 12th and 13th gen servers use software licensed iDRAC 7 & 8's respectively All iDRAC 5s are singular bits of hardware with dedicated nics. The naming system for Dell servers is as follows. 4 Digit numbers (9th gen and below). 1 - Class of server 9 - Generation 5 - This number is generally used to say 'amd or intel' but really only the 2970 follows that, its a useless number 0 - Denotes a rack or blade, if this is a 5 it is a blade if its a 0 its a rack. 1 Letter 3 numbers (10th gen and above) R, T or M - Rack tower or Blade 6 - Class of server 1 - Generation (10th is 0, 11th is 1, 12th is 2 and so on) 0 - Intel or AMD - A 5 denotes AMD 0 denotes Intel • • • • •.
